I am Dr. Paul E. Marik, MD, FCCM, FCCP. I trained in Johannesburg, ran ICUs at Baragwanath Hospital, and later served as Professor of Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Eastern Virginia Medical School. I have written more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, four critical care textbooks, and the Cancer Care monograph. In 2017 the American College of Physicians named me National Teacher of the Year.What I learned in critical care still drives my work: when a single pathway fails, you do not wait—you press on several systems at once. That is how I built the HAT protocol for septic shock and, with colleagues, MATH+ for hospitalized COVID-19 as a co-founder of the FLCCC.
